I had no idea what I wanted to be growing up. Come to think of it, I was never asked the question.
Growing up in an Asian, immigrant household and being the eldest daughter, I was expected at a young age to graduate with straight A's and get a traditional office job.
However, much like many dreams, it started to show cracks as I struggle to navigate my identity in high school, often wondering where I belong and how to fit in (err, smelly lunches, anyone?). So rather than spend my precious time studying or figuring out exactly what I wanted to do, I spent the next decade people-pleasing, making decisions out of alignment, and constantly coming out on the short end of an endless game of comparison-itis. Whoops.
Starting a business took me on a journey of self-discovery and defying my parents' expectations.
Sounds a bit dramatic, I know, but it really did.
Graduated University and College? Check.
Secured a 9-5 corporate career in an industry I loved? Check.
Nominated as a rising star and best event/wedding planner? Check.
I was checking all of the boxes and yet, a part of me still felt misaligned and restless. I loved my career in the events industry but yet, something deeper was missing. Tired of running in circles, I finally decided to face my self-limiting beliefs head on (thank you Saturn Return) - and begun to live my life on my own terms. A life that is effortlessly aligned with who I am and what I love to do. A life that prioritizes balance and celebrates fun. A life that is filled with impact and generosity.
If there's one thing I learned, it's to chase your dreams and not anyone else's.
To me, building a reputable, successful brand is not about following someone's step by step roadmap but more about becoming who you are meant to be and allowing yourself to step into your potential. That's where the magic happens! That's what makes you one of a kind.
